Papers, 1785-1912.

Primarily a collection of papers for the Smith family, but also includes the related Farrington and Cromwell families. Approximately one-third of the collection consists of personal letters of Elihu Smith (d.1824), his wife Catherine Farrington, his son Thomas T. Smith (1820-1883), and his daughter-in-law Sarah B. Cromwell. There are also accounts for the estate of Elihu Smith, business papers of Thomas Smith, and an account book for Percival Smith. In addition, there are four diaries with accounts of visits to Quaker meetings on the East Coast; and a Smith family genealogy, 1880.

The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church. The Smith, Farrington, and Cromwell families were allied families residing in the northeastern United States, with certain family members residing in New York City, Brooklyn, and Queens. The common ancestor of the Smith and Farrington families was Thomas Bowne, who was born in England in 1595. His descendant, Mary Bowne (1723-1805), married John Farrington (d. 1783) in 1749.
